18 Oct Waves for kids who love surfing

How far would you travel to take your kids surfing?

It may sound extreme to the vast majority of us, but for one dad of surf-mad kids the answer to that question is ‘about 6,000 miles’.  And yes, you can double that for the round trip.

Earlier this season, Stu Brown made the journey to Surf Snowdonia from his home in Miyazaki, Japan, along with his children – 9-year-old Sky and her little brother Ocean, 5.

Sky is a bit of a star on the international skate scene (OK, that’s an understatement, you should really check them out), making the record books in 2016 as the youngest ever person to compete in the Vans Open Pro Series. She was 8 years old.

Sky is also a dedicated surfer, and was delighted when her dad said he would be bringing her to Surf Snowdonia, North Wales, as a 9th birthday treat. Check out how she and her little bro got on in the pics below. She told her dad it was ‘the best birthday treat ever’ (he must have been relieved, given the miles!!).

So why do parents love to bring their kids to Surf Snowdonia?

For some, it’s undoubtedly the setting (our mountains and forest backdrop is pretty spectacular) and the novelty of surfing on a world-first piece of engineering. The roar of our powerful inland waves is quite a remarkable thing to behold.

For many though, it’s also got a lot to do with safety and convenience.

Our surf lagoon offers a highly supervised and controlled environment with far fewer dangers than you would find in the ocean. No navigating tides, rocks or other ocean hazards.

We also have comfortable, heated changing facilities and hot showers within a few paces of our lagoon.  No sandy swimming kits or freezing windy beaches to contend with.

Our second-to-none expert tuition may also have something to do with it: our friendly coaching team is led by five-times – and current – Welsh champion surfer Jo Dennison, also a former British Junior Team Coach. Under Jo’s expert guidance, our surf academy coaches will help your child to progress their skills quickly and with a smile on their face.

But you know what else it might be? Our pizza. Our puddings. And our great range of refreshing Snowdonia real ales (other drinks are of course also available!). As mums and dads will tell you the world over; quality refreshments are important when planning a happy day out 😊.

Our surf academy is still taking lesson bookings for this October half term, and we have some availability on our freesurf sessions over the half term weeks.

Best of all you don’t have to travel a million miles (or 6,000) to find us. We’re just 15 minutes from Conwy, an hour from Chester, and 90 minutes from Liverpool or Manchester.  Birmingham and the West Midlands are an easy couple of hours day-trip.

We even have warm, comfortable B&B glamping accommodation from £25 per person per night if you’d like to say over and explore North Wales for a couple of days.

So why not treat your kids to a new adventure this half term? Book their surf lesson online, or call us on 01492 353 123 to grab your slot.
