08 Mar Announcing our plans for Ladies’ Month this International Women’s Day
Observed since the early 1900s and recognised and celebrated every year by millions of women the world over, it probably hasn’t escaped you that today – March 8, 2018 – is International Women’s Day.
It’s a day when women around the globe are celebrated for their achievements and successes, but also for the barriers they have fought to overcome. Here at Surf Snowdonia, we’re wishing all the mighty women on the planet a very happy day.
This year, it’s also a day that we’d like to share plans for an awesome event of our own: we’re delighted to announce that we will be hosting the first ever Surf Snowdonia Ladies’ Month to kick off this summer.
Why Ladies’ Month?
According to research carried out by Sport England, there is still a huge gender gap in sport participation in the UK. Around 2 million fewer 14-40 year-old women than men engage regularly in a sport or activity. That’s despite the fact that 75% of women and girls say they want to be more active.
It seems such a waste of potential – not just of what women could achieve, but of the happiness, joy and sense of achievement they could feel.
We hope our Ladies’ Month – which will take place in June 2018 – will go some way to help bridge that gap. It will feature a busy 30-day programme of female-focused events, activities, workshops and discounts which will all be designed to get more women engaged in a sport or activity they love.
We’ll be revealing more details over the coming months, so stay tuned to our social media channels to be the first to know more about our plans.
Why Surf Snowdonia?
Nurturing female talent in what has traditionally – but not exclusively – been a male-dominated sport, is something we take seriously, every day of the year.
You probably know that the Surf Snowdonia Surf Academy is led by an awesome woman – multiple Welsh and former British surfing champion Jo Dennison, but actually our success relies on the talent and drive of a whole bunch of wonderful women, from our expert coaches to our lifeguards, to our customer services and catering team. They are all critical to our success, and all equally valued.
We believe that our guaranteed inland waves, safe, controlled environment, expert tuition and warm changing facilities have transformed the accessibility of our sport regardless of age, ability or gender.
We’ve seen that illustrated countless times on our lagoon – from the never-surfed-before kids who are now the dudes at our community surf club, to our regular adaptive surfers through to our silver surfers and the countless beginners who have picked up a board for the very first time on our shores.
So, ladies, this International Women’s Day we salute you. Enjoy. Be proud. Make plans and then go out and achieve them. And if you’d like to make 2018 the year you start ripping our waves for the very first time, get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
